What is a dental implant?

An implant consists of a titanium or zirconium screw that is placed into the jawbone and allowed to integrate with the surrounding bone and gums. After several months, once the implant is healed, an abutment is screwed on top of it. The abutment looks like a thimble that sticks out of the gums and a crown is cemented on top of that to give the appearance of a natural tooth.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
