Why Does the Cost of Dental Implants Frequently Vary?

Are you confused by the different costs associated with dental implants? Learn more about the difference in pricing and important details that you should keep in mind when determining which dental implant is right for you.

Dental implants are one of the most exciting advances in oral healthcare, and they’ve become increasingly popular in recent years. Now a mature technology that offers a restorative solution for many patients, implants provide a permanent and natural-looking tooth replacement. However, because they require special materials and extensive surgical skills for a predictable result, they often come with a high price tag.

But if you’ve investigated implants recently, you may have noticed there is immense variation in the price options. Why might one practice quote you a price several thousand dollars more or less than another practice? It’s not all about margins. In truth, there is a wide degree of variability in the quality of treatments and materials that accounts for the price differences.

Not All Implant Cases Are the Same

One cause of price variation is that no two dental implant cases are the same. One patient may have a straightforward procedure that costs less, while another may need additional site preparation and work that adds up. These variations are why individual, personalized quotes are important for determining the right option for you. However, while each patient may have a different path to take towards implants, there are several other reasons why implants range in cost.

Many Manufacturers Are Working at Different Quality Levels

The source of dental implant hardware, from the post itself to the actual tooth crown that rests on the post, is often a significant reason for cost variations. In the earlier days of implants, there were only a couple of different implant brands. Today, there are hundreds of companies making implants and selling them to dentists at varying prices. However, there are only a handful of implant brands with longstanding research backing their success. These, in my opinion, are the only ones that can guarantee predictable results. Additionally, different dental laboratories produce varying quality implant crowns and abutments that rest on top of the implant itself. Cheaper laboratories use generic parts, including the screws that hold the implant together. Placing the same, generic parts on all different implant brands does not produce a tight fit and allows for micrograps to form leading to crowns loosening and breaking, or worse, screws breaking inside the implant. So while using a reputable implant company and its original parts as opposed to a cheap company with generic parts may be the difference between an implant lasting ten and 20 years, the cheaper options can start to cause problems as soon as a year after being placed.

It’s worth considering with care the way your dental implant hardware has been sourced. As the patient, it’s important to do your own research into the parts and implant brand being used so you can make an educated decision for the best outcome.  While they must all be safe for use in the body, there can be significant variation in other aspects as well.

Some Parts Have More Material Options

Some cost differences occur because there are different materials in play. For example, porcelain is a popular option for implant crowns, but zirconia is also a possible solution. Likewise, the implant posts might use titanium or another kind of material. The components of these parts contribute both to their efficacy and their cost. Materials that look more “natural” in the mouth tend to have a correspondingly higher price. Speak with your dentist about the differences between choices and why you might prefer one over another.

Does More Expensive Always Mean Better?

There is a lot to unpack surrounding the price of implants. Should you always opt for the priciest solution? More money doesn’t always mean better, although there is undoubtedly some truth to the expression “you get what you pay for” when it comes to implant restorations. Ultimately, the right price point for you will depend on the individual factors that define your treatment pathway.
